Everyone knows that kids love holidays more than almost anything. If you think stores start stocking Halloween decorations and costumes a little prematurely, ask any six-year-old when he or she starts preparing, and you’ll likely hear something like, “Since Easter.”

Halloween is the perfect opportunity for parents to spend quality time with their kids and guarantee that everyone has a blast. So this year, try broadening you and your kids’ horizons and go beyond the usual store-bought costumes and neighborhood trick-or-treating by scheduling a day packed with spooky fun for all ages.

BOO AT THE ZOO, Various Dates

If you have younger kids, Boo at the Zoo at Evansville’s Mesker Park Zoo & Botanical Garden is the perfect solution to some of the drawbacks of trick-or-treating such as limited neighborhood participation or keeping the youngest members of your family visible to drivers. Kids can trick-or-treat to their hearts’ content at candy stations throughout the zoo, enjoy games and activities, and watch fun performances from magicians and storytellers. Best of all, there’s nothing overly scary to upset your little ones!

Boo at the Zoo takes place from 5-8 p.m. on October 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, & 27. Tickets are available at the gate and online, from $6 for zoo members to $8 for general admission.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN WEEKENDS AT HOLIDAY WORLD, Weekends through October 27th, 2013

If you have older children or teenagers that can handle a few more thrills and chills, Holiday World’s Happy Halloween Weekends are on Saturday and Sunday through October 27. On top of the usual rides, there will be corn mazes and a 3D Halloween Adventure in the Holiday Theater, as well as a costume dance party and a laser light show. Everyone is bound to enjoy their favorite theme park even more than usual.

Saturday hours last from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. General admission is $29.95 ($5 cheaper online!), and guests under 54″ and seniors get in for $19.95 ($17.95 online). Children two and younger are admitted for free.
