In addition to an Oscar-nominated career, Gary Oldman has also had an impressive run in movie franchises of late. From 'Harry Potter' to 'The Dark Knight' to 'Planet of the Apes,' Oldman is turning into the new Samuel L. Jackson. The only thing he's missing is a role in the biggest franchise in the world: 'Star Wars'. But, it turns out he might not be missing that for very long.

While promoting 'RoboCop,' Oldman was asked by Britain's Sky Movies about whether he would be interested in a role in 'Star Wars: Episode 7' - a standard stock question that just gets people talking about how yeah sure, it would be fun, but with Oldman it turned out he actually had some news.

"They've called..." Oldman said with a sly grin. When pressed for details, he added:

Yeah...I don't know whether I -- It's so [long pause] you have to be...I'm more cynical about it now. I always believe when I'm on the plane home. The deal wasn't done. But, yeah....they've inquired (laughs). Yeah...

This is why we love older actors. They don't have time for that misdirection crap. Yeah, J.J. Abrams called about 'Star Wars: Episode 7' so what? Put that in your mystery box!

It seems as if Oldman is hesitant to talk about it, not because he's afraid of revealing something he isn't supposed to, but, as he notes, "the deal [isn't] done." That's not to say there is a deal waiting to be done, they could be in any stage of talks. If they called, we'll assume he answered (if he's OK to star in 'RoboCop,' we'll assume he'd be OK to star in 'Star Wars: Episode 7') and they've had some level of discussions. How far those discussions have gone, remain to be seen.

Lately, Oldman has shied away from villains after a decade of playing nefarious characters in 'Dracula,' 'True Romance,' 'The Professional,' 'The Fifth Element,' 'Air Force One' and 'JFK' in the 90s. But, we'd love to see Oldman back in a villainous role as some evil Sith lord. We'll expect he'll be more like a Obi-Wan type character though, which we couldn't be unhappy about either.

What do you think? Do you like the idea of Gary Oldman joining the original cast in 'Star Wars: Episode 7'? What other actors do you hope join the film?
