Evansville High School Football Kicks Off This Weekend

The ultimate goal for every team. Playing for a state title inside Lucas Oil Stadium. (Photo courtesy, Ryan O'Bryan)

The best time of the year (in my opinion) is upon us.

The NFL preseason is underway, the college teams are hitting the practice fields getting ready for their season which begins in early September, and locally, area high school football teams are ready to take the field across the tri-state in their annual quest for a state title. For the Evansville high schools, that quest begins this Friday night.

A couple of teams, such as Mater Dei and Central will be looking at new quarterback’s under center after losing multi-year starters to graduation. The same applies to other positions across the roster. Mater Dei in particular lost 22 players from last year’s Class 2A state runner-up squad, seven of them being three year starters.

Others, like the Castle Knights who went undefeated in the regular season, but were knocked out of the state tournament in the sectional round, return nearly everyone from last year’s team and should be a dominate force in Class 5A. Meanwhile, Reitz, Harrison, Bosse, and Memorial will look to build on the lessons learned from last year in an effort to improve their standing within the Southern Indiana Athletic Conference (SIAC), while North will finally get to play on their very own home field at their new location in northern Vanderburgh County after sharing home field with Central for the program’s entire existence.

All in all, it should be another great year for Evansville high school football and you can catch all the action on 106-1 KISS-FM’s sister-station, Newstalk 1280 featuring play-by-play from Jimmie Ford, and yours truly handling color commentary duties.
