The 2014 season certainly didn't turn out the way Robert Mathis had hoped after a career year in 2013. But thanks to a contact extension announced earlier today by the team, he'll get at least one more year to prove there's still good football left in his tank.

With his season over before it started thanks to a four-game suspension for violating the league's performance-enhancing drug policy, followed by a torn Achilles tendon while working out at his home in Atlanta, Mathis returned to the Colts facility today to rejoin his teammates and sign a one-year contract extension that will keep him with the team through the 2015-2016 season.

Terms of the deal were not released by the team, however Coach Chuck Pagano spoke to the media during his Monday morning press conference and addressed what the outside linebacker's role will be with the team now that he's back.

He's got to earn his check somehow...Just like Reggie. Reggie got enough time off to have surgery and mend up for a little bit and then he got back out here and 'assistant coach.' So that's what (Mathis') title is now. Great teammate, assistant coach, locker room patrol, he's got all kinds of assignments. I've got a whistle for him in my office ready to roll.

The lack of Mathis on the defensive side of the ball has been noticeable over the first four weeks of the season as the team has had difficulty generating much of a pass rush against opposing quarterbacks. They rank 21st in the league against the pass, while racking up eight sacks, seven of which came against Jacksonville and Tennessee the past two weeks.
