LIVE with George Noory
Guest: Phil Zimbardo

Renowned social psychologist, Philip Zimbardo, is perhaps best known as the creator of the Stanford Prison Experiment. He will discuss this landmark study, in which a group of college-student volunteers was randomly divided into ‘’guards” and “inmates’’ and then placed in a mock prison environment. Within a week the study was abandoned, as ordinary college students were transformed into either brutal, sadistic guards or emotionally broken prisoners. Dr. Zimbardo's current research looks at the psychology of heroism. He asks: ‘’what pushes some people to become perpetrators of evil, while others act heroically on behalf of those in need?’’

Guest: Elizabeth Svoboda

Science journalist, Elizabeth Svoboda, will continue the discussion of heroism and how researchers are now applying the lens of science to study heroism for the first time. How do biology, upbringing, and outside influences intersect to produce altruistic and heroic behavior? And how can we encourage this behavior in corporations, classrooms, and individuals? She will share fascinating real-life examples of how our genes compel us to do good for others, how going through suffering is linked to altruism, and how acting heroic can greatly improve your mental health.
