While we were saddened to see Bobby Cannavale depart HBO’s ‘Boardwalk Empire‘ last year, the former Gyp Rosetti may not have gone very far. New reports claim that Cannavale has won the leading role in a long-gestating music drama pilot created for HBO by Martin Scorsese, Mick Jagger himself, and ‘Boardwalk Empire’ creator Terence Winter.

Cannavale has bounced around a bit in the last few years, most recently landing a guest arc on Showtime’s ‘Nurse Jackie,’ but the one-time ‘Boardwalk Empire’ star will soon return to HBO for a buzzworthy new music drama set in the 1970s. Previously titled ‘History of Music,’ the drama stems from an idea by Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, with Martin Scorsese on board as executive producer.

Cannavale will star as Richie Finestra, a handsome and charismatic New Yorker who heads A&R at American Century Music. The cocaine-fueled record executive operates in New York City circa 1977, when “punk, disco and a new form of music called hip-hop collided.” Winter will write the script for the pilot, joining Jagger and Scorsese as executive producers, along with Jagged Films partner Victoria Pearman and Scorsese’s manager, Rick Yorn.

So what do you think? Could Bobby Cannavale lead the next great HBO drama, given the project’s pedigree?
