jesustattoo.org

This billboard in Lubbock, TX, that is getting a lot of attention. A Christian outreach group, Jesustattoo.org depicts Jesus with words tattooed on him like, “outcast,” “addicted,” and “useless.”

When users view Jesustattoo.org, there is a video that explains the billboard. A bearded man is tattoo artist who transforms the above negative words on people’s bodies into words like, “accepted,” “free” and “purpose.” In the process, he takes on the negative tattoos. It is revealed that the man is indeed Jesus and it goes on to invite you to contact the group for encouragement and resources on Christianity.

“The message is a simple one, Jesus’ love is transformative,” Ashleigh Sawyer, media relations coordinator for Jesus Tattoo, told the Christian Post of the campaign. “He loves us unconditionally and no matter what you’ve been marked with, faith in Him and love for others will transform us.” .

Many in the Lubbock community find the billboards to be blasphemous and derogatory to their faith. According to the Christian Science Monitor, the divide may be a generational one.

“The reaction from some older Texans, according to KEYE-TV in Austin, was less than supportive. One man interviewed called the billboards ‘derogatory’ and another described them as ‘blasphemous.’ However, younger Texans saw the billboards as positive. ‘If you want to express how you feel about God, you can put that on your body,’ said one young woman.”

“We’re finding that those who visit the website and watch the video come to understand the message of the campaign.”  “Certainly, like with all deeply personal relationships, not everyone approves of the image of Jesus with tattoos, but we welcome the controversy because we understand that a dialogue on the issue is the best way to spread the message.” -Ashleigh Sawyer, jesustattoo.org
