Beware of Canada’s Most Dangerous Teacup Chihuahua

A teacup Chihuahua named Molly has bitten off more than she can chew as far as one Canadian city is concerned. The three-pound dog recently bit a postal worker, and now authorities in Windsor say she is a “dangerous dog” and have ordered that she be muzzled and kept on a leash at all times.

Now, Molly’s owner, Mitzie Scott, is appealing the city’s decision to label her dog dangerous because she feels the dog’s size makes it an exception. “I don’t even know if they have muzzles that size,” said Scott. “I just think it’s kind of silly, to the extreme. The dog is literally three pounds—it’s the size of an adult shoe.”

Small dog or not, the city says that by law any dog that causes injury to a person or domestic animal must be registered as a “dangerous dog,” a label that, in addition to the city’s muzzle and leash requirements, also forces owners to carry a million-dollar liability insurance policy. They must also place a sign on their front door that reads, “Warning: Dangerous Dog on Premises.”

So far, Scott’s appeal has been denied by the city. The likelihood of that decision being overturned doesn’t look good, especially since there is already a Chihuahua registered as a dangerous offender in Windsor. However, this one outweighs Molly by a whole five pounds.
