‘Battle Angel’ is Still a Film James Cameron Wants to Make … Eventually

James Cameron has certainly been keeping himself busy — the director, known for crafting some pretty epic films, is hard at work on both ‘Avatar 2‘ and ‘Avatar 3,’ but he still hasn’t forgotten about another passion project: ‘Battle Angel Alita,’ based on the Japanese comics of the same name. And he’s still committed to getting around to making that movie, but probably not as soon as you think.

Cameron took a trip down to Mexico City this week to speak at the technology forum TagDF, and The Film Stage was able to translate some of the more interesting revelations at his panel. Namely, what the king of 3D thinks of ‘Iron Man 3‘ and ‘Man of Steel‘ being in 3D (he doesn’t think they needed it), and his work with Alfonso Cuaron on the upcoming film ‘Gravity.’

And while all of that is pretty interesting, we’re more concerned with what he plans to do after ‘Avatar.’ While release dates haven’t been confirmed, rumor has it that ‘Avatar 2′ and ‘Avatar 3′ will hit theaters in December 2015 and 2016, respectively. But what will he do when ‘Avatar’ is finally over?

Cameron says he still wants to make ‘Battle Angel,’ based on the Japanese manga ‘Battle Angel Alita.’ He says that the themes of trans-human exploration in those books have “haunted” him for years. But with his ‘Avatar’ schedule, we won’t see ‘Battle Angel Alita’ until at least 2017 — or later. If Cameron films both ‘Avatar’ sequels simultaneously, it’s likely he can begin work on ‘Battle Angel’ in 2016, and if he takes a break or if ‘Avatar’ takes longer than planned, we might not see this film until 2018.
