While many coaches are gearing up for bowl season, it's that time of year when many other underperforming college college coaches get their walking papers. This year, some big names--including the winningest coach in Cal history and a guy who won a national title less than two years ago--headline the list of coaches who have been fired.
In a move that shakes up two power conferences, University of Arkansas officials announced Tuesday evening that Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema had accepted the Razorbacks' head coaching position. Terms of the deal were not announced, but the contract is reportedly a six-year deal worth $3.2 million per year.
History could be in the making this weekend, with a defensive player and a freshman highlight among this year’s finalists for the Heisman Trophy. Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel, Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o and Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein were announced as candidates for football’s most prestigious trophy, which will be awarded Saturday night.
As expected, Notre Dame and Alabama will meet in the BCS National Championship Game to award another trophy to one of college football’s most successful programs. However, the complete bowl lineup was not without some surprises, including #15 Northern Illinois crashing the BCS party and 9-3 Louisiana Tech being left home for the holidays after their administration turned down an Independence Bowl invite.
Here is the full schedule of this year’s college football bowl games:
Sadly, we’ve come to the end of another exciting regular season in college football. Unless you are Notre Dame or Alabama, you are left wondering what might have been. Yet, despite the sadness inherent in the end of the season, there was still a lot of excitement this week—and of course bowl season still ahead of us.
Here are all the highlights from this week in the Top 25:
Sadly, we’ve come to the end: the last week of college football’s regular season. And while many teams are already in the stable waiting to find out their bowl opponents, there is still a lot of action this week with a spot in the national-title game and at least seven conference championships still up in the air.
Here all the highlights from this final week in the top 25:
Gene Chizik and the Auburn Tigers won the national championship in 2010. Less than two years later, the school announced Sunday that Chizik had been fired after one of the worst declines since the A.P. poll began in 1936.
Notre Dame punched its ticket into the national title game. And now the Fighting Irish must wait one more week to find out who their opponent will be. With Alabama and Georgia both recording big wins, it sets up a monster showdown in next week’s SEC title game, with the winner advancing to the BCS national championship.
With this being rivalry week and, for most teams, the end of the regular season, there were a lot of exciting games this week. Here are all the highlights:
Iron Bowl. The Game. Bedlam. They’re the games that need no introduction. And those are just some of the ones with cool nicknames. They don’t even take into account big games this week like Florida/Florida State, Notre Dame/USC and South Carolina/Clemson.
Maryland announced Monday that it was accepting an invitation to join the Big Ten conference. Rutgers is expected to make a similar announcement on Tuesday. So, for those keeping track at home, the Big Ten will have 14 teams, the Big 12 has 10, and San Diego State will be in the Big East. Got it?
Here's more on the Big Ten announcement as well as some other news and notes from around college football:
