Dave Westrich

I grew up in Cincinnati, beginning my radio career at my high school radio station, WNSD. I landed in Evansville in 1980.  Throughout the 80's and early 90's, I learned the ropes of radio in several different positions on WGBF AM and WKDQ.  My radio hiatus came in spring of '92 when I attended U.S.I. to become an educator.  I acquired my B.S. and began teaching shortly thereafter.  Although I had a great time with the kids in North Spencer, I made the decision to return to the airwaves in June of 2011.  Now I'm spending the afternoons with you! I have an absolutely wonderful wife, Jenny (we met at the very first Mike Harvey sock hop in 1990),  two awesome kids, and some little critters to keep us all company.

Believe It or Not, Electroshock Therapy Making a Comeback for Alzheimer’s Patients

Remember the (good?) old days when electricity was used for treating all sorts of behavioral disorders?  Eventually most of us came to think of that sort of "treatment" as cruel and barbaric, but now electricity is once again being used for treatment of Alzheimer's and similar dementias.  "Now, Ladies and Gentlemen, may I present the 'brain pacemaker.'"

Natural Gas Energy in Alaskan Ice

Believe it or not!  The U.S. Department of Energy has declared that within the Alaskan ice are pockets of methane hydrate that looks like ice but isn't. The methane hydrate is the main ingredient of natural gas and burns like a candle if its molecules are warmed enough.  Already 1 million cubic feet of methane has been produced.

The Smell of Rotten Eggs: Will It Make You Live Longer?

No, rotten eggs won't make you live longer.  I would never recommend eating one, either.  It's just the smell of rotten eggs, the gas hydrogen sulfide, that may provide you with more years to live.  How's that?  Hydrogen sulfide may activate a gene inside your body's cells that are connected to longevity.

There May Be a Link Among Migraines, Heart Attacks and Strokes

My wife, Jenny, is a migraine sufferer and I'm sad to read the news that migraines, heart attacks and strokes could be linked.  A recent study involving 28,000 women demonstrated that migraines with "auras" (flashing lights and/or blind spots) contributed to heart attacks and strokes.

Lack of Good Sleep Affects Your Health

I have to admit that I'm not a good sleeper and I don't usually get enough of it either.  Ask me...does it affect my mood and my attitude?  Oh, yeah.  Does it affect how I feel physically?  Oh, yeah.  Lack of sleep and/or good sleep affects us all, even if we don't realize it.  So what can we do about it?
