‘American Horror Story: Coven': Cast Characters Revealed, and More Witchy Spoilers
Just as 'American Horror Story: Coven' gave out a little taste of its third FX season in casting Alexandra Breckinridge earlier today, writer Tim Minear and the cast previewed the next chapter from the ongoing TCA press tour. The more feminist and "fun" season gave way to revealing its witchy major cast of characters, as well as a look into how the New Orleans setting informed this year's 'Horror.'
For one, series star Jessica Lange confirmed that she would play a witch named Fiona, though she knew few details of the character herself, considering the show had only shot two days worth of footage. This time around, Sarah Paulson will play her daughter, as mother-daughter and heavily feminine themes will pervade the storytelling this year.
Kathy Bates revealed herself to be playing the historical role of Madame Marie Delphine LaLurie, an infamous Louisiana-born socialite and serial killer who kept slaves bound within her home, and murdered them in collaboration with her third husband. Meanwhile, Angela Bassett will bring to life the role of 1800s "Voodoo Queen" Marie Laveau, a voodoo expert who, along with her daughter, amassed a strong following in New Orleans. "She was a woman in 1801 who lives to be 80 years old who is a very influential person in the city," said Bassett. "My character is based loosely on her."
As for the themes du jour, writer-producer Tim Minear explained “There’s a feminist theme throughout Coven. There are also themes of race and oppression and family, especially mothers and daughters, along with laughs and scares and a few tears.” As expected, she season will have a bit "more fun" in its storytelling, as opposed to the dreary horror of 'Asylum.'
Elsewhere, we know that the third season will be set in the modern day across several cities, primarily New Orleans, and will occasionally dip back into the past as the story requires. ‘American Horror Story: Coven’ will also welcome newcomers Emma Roberts, Patti LuPone, and Gabourey Sidibe along with returning franchise regulars Jessica Lange, Denis O’Hare, Alexandra Breckinridge, Lily Rabe, Taissa Farmiga, Frances Conroy, and Evan Peters. Prior series stars Zachary Quinto and Dylan McDermott have not been confirmed to return, and may sit the third round out if scheduling falls through.
Well, what say you? Are you excited for the witch third season of 'American Horror Story: Coven?' What horror tropes would you want to see brought to live this time around, when the new episodes premiere in October?
