4 – $20 Sacrifices You Can Make To Become a Partner in Hope with St. Jude

You may think you don’t have an extra $20 in your monthly budget to become a Partner in Hope with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, however I’m here to tell you that if you look at where your money goes, finding that extra $20 to help fight childhood cancer is easier than you think.

Morning Beverage

I’m a coffee drinker, but I’ve started a really bad habit of picking up an energy drink of some sort at the gas station I pass on the way into the station every morning. That’s anywhere between $2.50 – $3.00 per morning. Sound familiar? If you’re morning routine includes a stop for a cup of coffee, a soft drink, energy drink, or whatever, cutting that out of your routine will not only give you the $20 to help the fight against childhood cancer, but may keep you a little healthier as well.

Out to Lunch

(Nikolay Trubnikov / Thinkstock)

Unintentionally, I think this list is starting to become more a wake up call for me as I realize there are quite a few ways I could save money. Going out for lunch almost every day is certainly one of those ways. At 6’3″ and roughly 230 pounds, it’s nothing for me to drop $10 or more on one lunch at a fast food joint. By bringing leftovers or a sandwich and chips from home TWICE out of the average 30 day month, that’s another $20 St. Jude can have.

Date Night

Movie Popcorn & Film Reel
(LoopAll / Thinkstock)

If your currently monthly budget includes a few trips to the movies with your significant other, or getting together with friends for a few drinks, try grabbing a DVD, some microwave popcorn, or ice cream and staying in for one of those nights. Or stick to just one thing on your night out. Go to dinner, but not a movie, or just a movie, and have dinner at home before you leave. Not only will you find the $20 bucks you need to be a Partner in Hope, you’ll find yourself saving a lot more cash for other things as well.

Lottery Tickets / Extracurricular Activities

Lottery Balls

If playing the numbers game each week is your thing, sit back and think about how much you’re dropping on those scratch-offs, or the weekly Powerball drawing. My guess is that it’s quite a bit, and probably more than you’ll ever get back. Now I’m not suggesting you quit altogether, but maybe you scale it back $5.00 each week. Over a four-week period you’ll have the $20, plus you’ll still be able to try and score that big payday.

While everybody’s budget is different, and maybe only one (or none) of the above suggestions apply to you, the point is you see where coming up with and extra $20 each month isn’t as difficult as you may think.
