• Statistics show that 25% or more of us will require blood at least once in our lifetime.

• Only 5% of eligible donors across the nation donate blood, but the number of transfusions nationwide increases by 9% every.

• Each whole blood donation can help as many as three people. One unit is divided into three parts: red blood cells, platelets, and plasma.

• On average, a hip replacement typically uses one unit of blood, a cardiac bypass 2 units, a heart transplant 2 units, and a liver transplant 10 units!

• Blood cannot be manufactured. It can only come as a gift from people.

• The need for blood increases during holidays and summer months. People are more apt to be traveling and active during these times and thus are at an increased risk for accidents.

Unless you are a vampire or a poor college kid who’s not quite ready for a real job, the thought of giving (or getting) blood doesn’t sound too appealing. We rarely think about the need for blood until something really dreadful happens but the truth is that dreadful things happen all the time. The need for blood grows each year and since red blood cells have a shelf life of only 42 days, it is vital to give blood regularly.
According to the American Red Cross, it is the single largest supplier of blood products to hospitals throughout the United States. While local hospital needs are always met first, the Red Cross also helps ensure no patient goes without blood no matter where or when they need it.
During the holiday season, it’s especially important to remember to take an hour to donate blood because not only do more accidents occur when roads are bad, there’s fewer daylight hours and people are traveling more but also because donations go down because of busy schedules.
The Red Cross is making it easy to donate this holiday season. Check out the list below to see the dates, times and locations of the mobile blood donation center or simply call 1-800-RED CROSS or visit redcrossblood.org to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license, or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
